The Grammar Question

What is the semicolon for and how do you know when to use it and what to use it for.

The semicolon is something that i dont know if i have ever used in any of my wirting. It's optional. It contains a period and a and a comma. Period are easy to use because you just put them at the end of a sentence. So when do you use the combination of both the comma and period.

This website helps explain what the semicolon is and when to use it, even though it is optional, its something good to experiment with using if you havent used it before. I thought that it was useful in explaining what the semicolon is for.

Does anyone use the semicolon in their writing often, Is it something that is good to use?

I must say - the link you posted relating to your grammar topic was quite hilarious and very helpful at the same time. I appreciated that the author provided informed "rules" for semicolon use and explained the purpose of the punctuation device in such a colorful and humorous context. Kudos on finding such a valuable resource.

As for when I use semicolons, I generally try to refrain. They are never required, and they can become a bad habit if used extensively. They pop up in my writing occasionally, but overall, I avoid them because I do not want to ever use them incorrectly. There is simply too much "gray area" where semicolons are concerned.

Haha, i liked reading this one not only because the link was funny, but because I actually used a semicolon in my blog that I wrote, and as I was typing it I was trying to figure out if I was using it correctly. I think that I've seen people use semicolons more informally than formally. I definitely try to stay away from them as well because they are confusing to me, and they leave more room for mistake.

Up until last year I never used semicolons because I did not know how to. Last year before writing our first english paper on Wuthering Heights my teacher did some grammar and for the first time the semicolon made some sense. She explained that it is used when combining two sentences into one. Now, this makes sense I guess, but it still never seems right to me so I never use them. Also the link was great, funny and helpful at the same time. Good find!
